5 of 5 stars  Great

I got interested in Dr. Perricone theory once I saw him on PBS over a year ago. He was convincing enough to make me, old sceptic, get his book and follow his advice... I recommend "The Perricone Promise" to anyone who wants to lead a healthier lifestyle and have younger looking skin. It is actually a continuation of the idea presented in his previous book "Perricone Prescription".

Dr. Perricone has an easy-to-read writing style. In addition, the book is not only informative but also inspiring. Both in the content and in the style Dr. Perricone reminds me of Dr. Tombak, whose book "Can We Live 150 Years?", although not as popular at Amazon, turned my life around, and made me pay close attention to what and how I eat, how I breathe, how I think, and how I live in general.

I keep both titles as my reference books. Although I know all the simple ideas presented by Tombak, I always get new motivation to improve my well-being whenever I read that book again... Same with Dr. Perricone - I reach for his book to complement on things that I am missing in the other volume, such as, for example, good information on supplements. I find a bundle of Perricone and Tombak a very good combination as they complement each other.

3 of 5 stars  The Perricone Promise

After reading this book I have to agree that trying to follow this diet is very hard for the average american to pull off. I checked into the acai berry and found out something great. You can drink it liquid form!! I didnt have to go far, I just did alittle research online. There is a product called Mona Vie and you dont have to search for it if you are looking to follow some or all of his meal advise. I have been taking this product for 1 1/2 weeks and feel great! I am happy I read the book even if this is what I learned. If you have any questions, contact me and I can get you the information. You can find me on Yahoo.

2 of 5 stars  Impratical for most people!

Dr. Nicholas Perricone's The Perricone Promise delves into the wrinkle-removing arena but also goes deeper. He tells us how we can look and feel 10 years younger in just 28 days. Who doesn't want to find the fountain of youth, or at least a reasonable facsimile? Perricone wants women and men to know that we can stay younger looking longer by following a program he designed to help reverse the aging process.

Perricone maintains that if we want to decrease our susceptibility to age-related disease and slow the aging process we must control inflammation. And to do that he suggests we must control our diet and stress. Sounds logical. Remember the old adage 'we are what we eat'. He also maintains that his three-pronged approach of diet, supplements and topicals will turn back the hands of time. In addition he supports and encourages exercise for good health.

I found the book interesting and logical but there was often more information given than I was really interested in knowing. The unfamiliar names like anthocyanins, antioxidants, and exitotoxicity, were difficult for a lay person and interfered with my reading. I enjoyed the book more when I felt Dr. Perricone got to the 'nuts and bolts' of the process.

I think that this program is great for people who have a personal chef who not only does the family cooking but the shopping as well. Or if you are someone who doesn't have anything better to do than shop and cook. Then, it's probably perfect.

I love the idea of this program, I just don't know how to stop my life long enough to live it.

1 of 5 stars  Overpriced and impractical program

I got this book from the library, thank goodness, and saved myself the money. I cannot tell you about the effectiveness of the program, having not tried it, but here are some of my problems with the "promise":

1. The scientific explanations which make up most of the book's text are so dense as to be almost inaccessible to the average educated reader. There seemingly was no attempt to the explain the science in an easily readable format.

2. What remains after the scientific explanations are
a) common sense advice that we've all heard before such as eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables, exercise, etc,
b) a list of super foods and supplements that help retard the aging process but many of which are hard to find (e.g. a Brazilian fruit called acai that you may or may not find in juice form in your local natural food store),
c) a suggestion for face creams that contain the anti-aging peptides and neuropeptides (naturally the face creams and supplements are mainly found on the Perricone website, and not guaranteed to work if bought elsewhere), and
d) the 28 day program of menus, supplements and face creams that will set you on the path to keeping your young skin, which was actually the most interesting/useful part of the book - some of the food recipes looked delicious and do-able.

Some of my pet peeves:
a) If vegetables so important to good health, I would expect a much higher focus in the recipe section on teaching people delicious recipes with vegetables - after all we all know a billion chicken recipes already!
b) the cover picture shows the author, apparently 45-55 years old, whose skin looks good and glowing, but not any better than your ordinary person of that age group who is watching what he/she eats and drinks, but NOT taking all those expensive supplements and creams. I would like to know how old the author is.
c) the daily supplements you are supposed to take are not listed in one place...you have to carefully search throughout the appropriate chapter to figure out what to take.
d) A last personal thought: if Perricone's face creams really work as well as he claims, how long do you think it will be before EVERY cosmetic company's creams will contain the effective ingredients - so how smart is it to pay extra money for a pricey brand?

In summary, I would recommend The Okinawa Program instead of this book - more available foods are recommended, it focuses on overall health instead of youth, and its science is accessible.

5 of 5 stars  delivers on its Promise
Tuesday, April 05, 2005

The Perricone Promise is one of those KEY self-help books that EVERYONE should read,
digest, and use in their day-to-day life....
The reason being that it creates a BASIC SHIFT in the attitudes and habits one has
about food -- and this is a fundamental reason why it works so successfully in
helping people make a REAL CHANGE in their lives. In this regard, it is right up
there with some of the very finest works in the self-help genre, including
AWAKEN THE GIANT WITHIN by Tony Robbins...
NEW SEX NOW by Clint
"Voice Lessons To Go" by Ariella
"The Artist's Way"
"Sex and the Perfect Lover" by Mabel Iam
and GODDESS WORSHIP by Dr. Clarke

Any one of these has the power to change one's life tremendously for the better. All four used in conjunction would create an entirely new person, infused with love, creativity, and personal power.

Amen!
